Hello everyone. I realize this is very short notice, but I'm hoping somebody can make it. Doing my best to get other RKBA supporters out there as well.
A thread on another forum deals with the events staged by these crazy, misinformed, and often hysterical anti-gun groups: http://http://forum.opencarry.org/forums/showthread.php?119101-Mom-s-Demand-Action-campaign-December-14th&p=2014703#post2014703

Here is a my response to one post on that thread:

Just go stand in middle of them with a big sign for the press to see that says

"We love so many kids got killed as it helps us push our anti-gun agenda! Guns are bad!"

and act like your totally one of them

As funny as that sounds, I'm afraid I'll be going to the local park protest with a sign of some sort.

Thinking about putting the Biden quote:
Joe Biden said:
"regarding the lack of prosecutions on lying on Form 4473s, we simply don’t have the time or manpower to prosecute everybody who lies"

That, or "How does rendering people defenseless help protect them from armed aggressors?"

As you can see, peaceful counter protest could help us show the media that the argument is not one-sided.

I forgot to put the actual post that started the thread:

With all the talk lately about the Newtown anniversary, I'm surprised I haven't heard more about MDA's campaign activities.

That being said, they published a list of places around the country they are holding events.

My question is this, would an open carry protest of these events, or rather this organization, be in poor taste? I'm up in the air about it. I'm highly considering going to the event in Columbus.

Thoughts?

The Arizona events were bolded by me. I will be at the Catalina Park event in Tucson. I hope others see this thread and do their best to attend as well, whether in Phoenix or Tucson. Have not yet heard of other events taking place in other cities.

Rusty - love your grit here, but sadly people here in AZ seem to have the attitude of :"oh well, someone else can stand up for MY rights. I'm too busy with _______ " fill in the blank.... :(

Thank God for AZCDL, but even they can't do all the heavy lifting all of the time. Inaction on our part = win for gun grabbers. They will show up and get their propaganda in the news, while we go quietly into the night on this one it seems. Hope to be proven wrong. Past experience has shown (April 27, 2013 pro-2A rally at state house) that we can't even muster more than 200 supporters on a sunny 90° Saturday. This in the heart of the aftermath of Newtown & the push by government/anti-freedom folks to strip all of the gun freedoms we enjoy here in AZ. Sometimes WE are our own worst enemies.

Rant off. :what:

Sorry for the long post. :)

OCed to the counter protest of the MDA anti-rights group. Showed up with two signs: an "Unarmed victims = Happy Criminals" and an "'Gun control' is SEXIST/RACIST" sign. Found an AZCDL member with signs and "Guns Save Lives" stickers in assistance during the early moments, and we were treated with disdain in general. So yes, only TWO supporters of the RKBA were in attendance as far as I could see. Would have liked to see a flood of RKBA supporters; as FreeInAZ pointed out, we seem to lack the mobilization of involved individuals. To be fair, I realize some people simply couldn't make it because of things that just couldn't be put off for later.

We were able to keep ourselves composed and tried not to give the anti-rights media in attendance any good sound bites to frame us in a negative light. Some antis in attendance could at least carry on a civil conversation without deviating from the topic or making fantastic leaps (you know, the types that argue "well what about tanks and nuclear weapons?!" in regards to the RKBA).
My 1911 was the center of attention when it came to me for several cameramen, and it was disheartening to find several gun owners support the notion that guns and the RKBA were only intended for hunting and sporting purposes. On a side note, I found it interesting that they gave so much frame time to the guy playing sad-sounding tunes on his violin, and that some seemed to intentionally crop me out of the frame when doing so.

During the event, an attempt was made to keep us and our signs covered by their own signs, despite the fact that we were standing there quietly unless in conversation. I found it to be very telling of their beliefs that they would try to shut us out of the conversation and the photo since we were also there to remember the victims of laws that cater to criminals by creating victim disarmament zones. One guy next to me was more brazen and tried to cover my sign, so I firmly, but politely pointed out that I was not doing that to them and I expected the same courtesy. He backed off, others didn't. I'd be lying if I said I didn't find comfort in their shock at seeing me pull the second sign from by backpack to counter their attempt to block me out.*Thankfully, youth, determination, and a bit of help from somewhere helped me keep up the two signs I had, one in each outstretched arm, ensuring that at least one of the signs was in the photo frame at any given time.

Afterwards, I was interviewed (and possibly the other RKBA supporter was as well) by two or so local media outlets, one of which was quite blatantly anti (they kept giggling or spoke in mocking tones) asking whether I though it disrespectful to OC on "the anniversary of Newtown," and I pointed out that I was not the one that murdered the children, and I was at the MDA event to remember the victims that were unarmed by laws, peacefully counter protest the MDA arguments and show that this was not a one-sided argument and that differing opinions existed. Will wait to see how the media outlets portray me (us?) and my (our?) words, if they do so at all.

The aftermath of the counter rally

In regards to the aftermath of the counter rally, I guess the AZCDL member-in-attendance and I didn't give them the sound bites they wanted, so they just quoted me without the full context being provided.

Here is the link to the story, in case anyone wants to leave them a comment or something:
http://www.kvoa.com/news/tucsonans-rally-for-gun-laws-on-newtown-anniversary/

TUCSON - Supporters of new gun laws organized events to remember the 1-year anniversary of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

Gabby Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly planted a rose bush at a community garden near Grant and Swan Roads.

"I don't think this is political," Mark Kelly said. "This is an issue that affects hundreds of thousands of families in this country every single year."

A new NBC News/ Wall Street Journal Poll shows demand for new gun laws is back to where it was before the Sandy Hook shooting. In February, 61 percent of Americans felt "laws covering the sale of firearms should be made more strict." The number is back down to 52 percent.

"Over time, people's interests and what they are thinking bout on a daily basis does change," Kelly said. "Unfortunately, if we don't make changes in laws affecting gun violence, we're not going to see this issue just go away."

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America organized a rally at Catalina Park near Speedway Boulevard and Fourth Avenue. The main speakers included Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild and T.U.S.D. Superintendent H.T. Sanchez. Several survivors of the January 8, 2011 Tucson mass shooting were in the crowd. Jocelyn Strauss is the group's regional manager.

"I don't feel like Americans are losing interest," Strauss said. "I feel like we're at a point now, actually, where we're more educated and informed. And we'll continue growing that way."

About 100 protesters attended, many held signs reading "end gun violence."

In May, the Department of Justice released a report showing gun-related homicides are down 39 percent in the past 20 years. In 1993, there were 18,253 gun deaths. In 2011, there were 11,101. The numbers have been fairly stable the past 10 years.

At the rally, a couple counter-protesters held signs reading "go after criminals leave us alone" and "unarmed victims = happy criminals." One man openly carried a holstered handgun. He did not want to give his name.

"I was not the one that was there that killed those children," he said. "A lot of people die by car accidents. Do you find it inappropriate that you drive around in a vehicle that has killed thousands of people?

Gabby Giffords recently transferred $300,000 to a newly formed political action committee. That PAC will give money to candidates who vote for stricter gun laws.

They forgot to mention:

1. the part where they asked me if I didn't think it was disrespectful to carry a handgun, especially on the anniversary of the tragedy (to which the above was PART of my answer).

2. the part where I pointed out that (baseball) bats and kitchen knives (along with vehicles) have been used to commit murders, but we don't seem to think it disrespectful to own any of them.

3. the part where I explained that guns, knives, and cars are all TOOLS, and as such are only extensions of the person that uses them.

4. the part where ALMOST a hundred people attended (I estimate 70-80 tops).

5.? I am not too sure that KVOA wasn't the disrespectful crew I spoke of earlier, but if so, you can add "failed to mention their question/accusation of politicizing the memorial event".

As to my words, in writing it would have been "I was not the one that was there; that killed those children." I thought I made it clear, but they made me seem like the kind of person that does not care about grammar.

*EDIT 15 Dec.* The video in the article cuts to the actual MDA protest at 1:12, and you can see the sign of the AZCDL member-in-attendance at 1:42. You will notice how we are cropped out of the frame until then.

A second article from another source

So I found another article on yesterday's counter rally. You will notice the large discrepancy between this one, which says about 50 people showed up for the MDA event, and the previous article's claim that "about 100" people showed up. As I stated before, I would say it was 60 people, maybe 80 TOPS.

Here is the link, in case you wanted to see it for yourself, take a look at the photo, or leave a comment:
http://www.tucsonnewsnow.com/story/...victims-of-sandy-hook-on-one-year-anniversary

Tucsonans honor victims of Sandy Hook on one year anniversary
By Matt Mendes

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -
Tucsonans gathered to remember those victims murdered in the Newtown, Connecticut mass shooting a year ago.

Families, community leaders and January 8th survivors joined "Moms Demand Action" to honor the victims with bell ringing.

The memorial was held at Catalina Park near 4th Avenue and Speedway. About 50 people attended, holding signs, wearing ribbons and one man even played his violin, calling for change to prevent future violence.

"Gun violence is not something that can happen to somebody else, it can happen to anybody," said Pam Simon, a January 8th survivor.

A few anti-gun control protestors showed up to the vigil.

"No law is going to stop a madman. No law is going to stop someone from getting a gun in the U.S.," Charles Heller, Arizona Citizen's Defense League, said.

At least one man was armed.

"The pistol on my hip is nothing more than an extension of myself. It is a tool and it is the user that determines whether good or evil is done to the community," said an armed man who wanted to be called "Citizen." "I am a law abiding citizen therefore I have nothing to worry about and neither should anyone around here."

"People need to get the message, this isn't going to end until we get some reasonable gun laws. Nothing that takes away people's guns but certainly helps to take them away from people who shouldn't have them," said Mayor Jonathan Rothschild, Tucson's Mayor.

So this article does present our words in more context, and for that I am thankful. Hopefully, a certain member of this forum will not begrudge my use of his moniker when identifying myself to the media. In my defense, I had inteded to say "you may refer to me as Armed Citizen", but for some reason "Armed" just didn't come out. My bad.

Also, you will notice my two homemade signs on brown cardboard (from a box I had lying around) in the photo just above and to the left of the man in blue.

Rothschild and others kept going on about how they are "hunters" and own guns, but don't have any "high-capacity" or semi-automatic firearms. They were the "sporting purpose only" people that claim to support the RKBA, but are actually proponents of "need", our enemies, and enemies of Freedom.

Rusty, do you think they will try this again this year ?

After seeing them push their rhetoric over the bodies of the teens who were murdered by a "popular" kid who couldn't lawfully CC (and was already breaking the law when entering the school armed), my answer is "why wouldn't they?". Better yet, why should we expect better from them?

As organizations, MAD moms, Illegal Mayors Against Legal Guns, and the Brady Brunch have all shown a predisposition to using the bodies of the fallen victims to advance their agenda, a tendency to espouse the violence they CLAIM to be against (bloodlust for those who have decided not to be easy prey), and their consummate ability to lie, distort, and exaggerate in spite of the fundamental flaw in their rhetoric: the law applies ONLY to those who choose to abide by it, and applies to criminals only if, and when, they are caught.:banghead:

I kept my signs, I have more cardboard, the printing costs are worth the expense, and I will be well rested on that morning. I hope I see at least one other Freedom-loving individual there, because it can be a lonely and disheartening experience to see so many people pushing to make others as defenseless as they've chosen to render themselves "for the children".

/rant off

Don't know how I missed this post.

THAT's the spirit I'd like to see in each and every armed Law-Abiding Citizen in Arizona; it'd send a very clear message to state and Fed "representatives" indeed.:)

I will be in Tucson that Sunday, and the MAD moms are likely to hit the same parks as last year (listed above, more or less).

Yes, if they are holding a rally, I will be there with my OC friends if I am in town. It will be an honor to counter-protest with them. I am happy to pay for any additional signs needed and gas for the trip to Tucson.

I think it is being brought back up in anticipation that the mad mommies will try it once again this year? Hopefully they don't. But then they'd miss their free bus rides, lunches & paychecks from their master, Mr. Bloomberg, wouldn't they? :(
