Carrying under 21 allowed if I'm a registered officer?

I just want to know if I would be allowed to carry at all, under 21. I looked around and couldn't find a very clear answer. I plan to go into the academy right after high school (as far as I understand, you can do that but correct me if I'm wrong) and I want to know whether I'm allowed to purchase and carry a handgun under 21 if I have gone through everything I need to to become an official officer. If you have an answer as to if I can or can not, please leave the corresponding law code as to why I can or can't.

Meet the basic requirements to become a police officer in Ohio. There are certain standards you need to meet in order to be a police officer. In Ohio, police officers must meet the following minimum criteria:[SUP][1][/SUP]
  • Be a United States citizen.
  • Be a high school graduate or have a GED at a minimum.
  • Be at least 21 years old when testing for the civil servants exam.
  • Have no felony convictions.

Note that there are distinctions (different standards) between "police officer", sheriff's deputy and highway patrolman.

First, just because you have successfully completed BLET [or Ohio’s equivalence] does not extend relief from, 478.99 Certain prohibited sales or deliveries.
(b) Sales or deliveries to under-aged persons.
...to any individual who the importer, manufacturer, dealer, or collector knows or has reasonable cause to believe is less than 21 years of age,....
ATF 5300.4 page 51.

Second, just because you successfully completed BLET does not grant LE authority since you have not been sworn in after being hired by an LE agency!

Third, your query about carry is incomplete, do you mean open or concealed?

Open, yes, that is until you get in your vehicle then you need an Ohio conceal permit or secure the firearm, unloaded in your vehicle.

Concealed NO! You must be 21. Further reading:

While true, the difficulty is in legally acquiring a handgun in Ohio under the age of 21. Ohio prohibits furnishing a handgun to anyone under 21 with few exceptions. See http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/2923.21

There is an exemption for any "law enforcement officer who is properly appointed or employed as a law enforcement officer and has received firearms training approved by the Ohio peace officer training council or equivalent firearms training."

But as you note, becoming eligible for that exemption may be problematic.

I know it is not Ohio but posted for general information.

In Wisconsin there have been many LEO's under 21 that have had to have someone else buy their handguns for them.

One does not see it as much any more as they added the requirement of have 60 collage credits to be a LEO in Wis.

So it is really not a unheard of.

JustaShooter, thanks I looked hi & low for that cite, bookmarked it ! Thanks.

My understanding, similar to LE convicted of DV activities, is ‘annointed’ LEs <21 may only carry their service firearms while accomplishing their official duties for their agency but to be honest not sure how the enforcement by the gang of blue would transpire if found carrying off duty?
