Clerk wounded in shooting at convenience store on Jefferson Davis Highway

By Reed Williams

Published: June 12, 2009

Richmond police are investigating the shooting of a convenience store clerk tonight on Jefferson Davis highway only about three blocks from where a shopkeeper was killed earlier this week.

Two gun-wielding males wearing all black entered the Golden Food Market in the 2700 block of Jefferson Davis shortly before 10 p.m., said Richmond Police Capt. Scott Booth.

An unknown number of rounds were fired and the clerk was shot six times, but police said his injuries were not life-threatening.

The clerk was taken to VCU Medical Center for treatment.

Late Tuesday night, Ashraf M. Alatiyat, 30, co-owner of the Come and Go Food Market in the 2400 block of Jefferson Davis, was shot to death during a robbery at the store.

Police have a grainy security-camera photo of the Come and Go suspect but have not made an arrest in the homicide.

Standing on the sidewalk tonight outside the Golden store, Felicia Cousins, who lives two blocks from the market, said she was a frequent customer there and also knew Alatiyat.

"I'm terrified. I'm scared to go into the store. Somebody might run into the store and shoot you," Cousins said.

Police have not determined whether the two store shootings are connected.

Does anybody else remember that the owner of the Golden Food Market was killed a few years ago? http://www.mayhem.net/Crime/morgue1.html
class=name
class=nameJanuary 4, 2003 - Four Dead in Virginia - A man in Richmond, Virginia, shot and killed his girlfriend and two convenience store workers before turning his assault rifle on himself. All four victims were declared dead in three different crime scenes. Police said the man went into a home in Richmond's Southside before 6 p.m. and shot his 27-year-old girlfriend in a bedroom as children and other relatives watched. The man then ran from the house several blocks to the Golden Food Market, where police said he shot and killed the owner of the store and an employee. According to police, the man then forced four men from the van they were sitting in outside the store and drove to a relative's house, where he shot and killed himself in front of several people.
All this is happening around me. And people wonder why I'm a bit twitchy:uhoh: some days!

Fortunately, Grapeshot is further away and never listens to the news. He be :cuss:that he missed the excitement again.

stay safe. Seriously, stay safe.

JD has been a war zone for years - it ain't getting any better and convenience stores have long been a target for the BGs. Remember when the clerk (owner?) of Fast & Friendly had the shoot out near Dundas (sp) RD.?

The 7-11 near there (where the UDW hang out looking for work) welcome me. Wonder why?

Well, that's not exactly true. I was assigned to the district back in 2004 and I was there for a year and a half. I am now back at my old assignment and have been back since the end of February. The call volume has gone way down. The shootings on the pike are not what they were 10 or even 5 years ago. It used to be that I couldn't go through a cycle at work without responding to a shooting or an occasional stabbing; now my shift has not had a shooting or a stabbing since I have been back.

These dirtbags will get caught. There seems tomethat the mentality of the pikehas changed a bit. People want to do theirthing and mind their business. The pike people arenot going to like these trouble makersbringing all the heatback on the pike.

BTW I had met Alex, the store owner that had been shot. It seemed to me he was well-liked and there was always people hanging out at his store laughing and carrying on. They never caused any trouble. I work directly beside his store. I relieved the shift on duty that responded to the incident. I am still bothered by the whole thing.

Appreciate your perspective and input.

Perhaps I am guilty of compressing my memories of past reports including the recent break in of the pawn/gun shop and many shootings that extend out into Chesterfield.

BGs do not stop at the city line and no locale is a safe zone.

Unfortunately this is still not an isolated incident.

I'd say. There's a video somewhere of a motorcycle cop in Hawaii that was shot.. 13 or 20 times?, with an AK and survived without any paralysis or anything. It does happen but you've got to scratch your head.

I recall years back seeing an x-ray of a guy's head with six (6) .22 slugs in it. He had passed out drunk in an alleyway, then woke up some hours later with a terrific headache. He went to the ER and they found "the reason(s)". They decided surgery would probably cause more trouble than he already had so they treated him "conservatively" i.e. they watched him. He was released in a few days with no major after effects.

I'd be afraid of Lead poisoning, but if he has a habit of passing out drunk in alleys that might the least of his worries.

Jim? Do they still bother you now? I guess they've migrated down to the spinal cord now, right? I've got a couple cysts in my lower spine and a tumor inside a vertebra between my shoulder blades. I guess .22 rounds may act about the same way, right?

;)

The pike isn't nearly as bad as it used to be. It's been years since I worked the area but then Blackwell was still there, the Brown's were still a big factor in the area and Ruffin Road, Belmont (I think it was Belmont or Belleview, something like that) and all areas of lowlife in between.

Even Brown Automotive which was owned by Lester Brown, the uncle of the notorious Browns, is gone now. Lester was an interesting fellow but contributed to a lot of the traffic in the area.

It was entertaining though. There was a young lady of virtue:what: named Big %itty Pam who worked the Highway Motel. In addition to entertaining guests, she sold drugs out of the motel and sent the buyers across the street to a used tire lot to use them. You could park in one of the lots nearby, and watch a virtual parade go through the place.

Ah...the good old days:uhoh:

If that wasn't enough fun, there was a bar...excuse me, restaurent called the wagon wheel, or Chuck Wagon, that was good for at least one good fight a night. Then the topless biker bars down the street that changed names every month.

We call it "The Pike" now and it's still somewhat of a playground - just new group, same rules.

Guy is shot six times and is doing alright? He needs to buy a lottery ticket.

A friend of mine hadtwelve .22LR's emptied into his chest at arms length and he didn't/doesn't have any major problem, bullets missed all vital organs.

Years later this same guy had a piece of steel (>500lbs) fall on his head while working at a casinoconstruction site and he survived, however he was laid up for > a yr.

Visit Master Shooter's in LV and you might run into him, he's a regular customer.

Not very familiar with Richmond area. Can anyone post a map of this general district so I know where to stay away from when I come down to Richmond.

Here in NOVA rules are easy - stay the **** out of DC and PG county, MD. If you absolutely have to go into DC, stay away from South East.
