Grapeshot,

By chance have you seen any units that also provide back up camera functionality?

I'm looking for a back up camera for the wife's vehicle and would like to have it support a second rearview camera on the back on the trailer when pulling that. The trailer camera would be for far more than backing....I'd like to be able to see what is behind me while driving. Far too many folks have no concept of being able to see the rear view mirrors of the tow vehicle and insist on tailgating.

If I could get the above, while also having a downloadable dash cam, especially for less than $1k, I'd be happy as a clam at high tide.

Thanks

Charles

Others have mounted one pointing to the rear for that purpose.

Beyond that you are talikg about a specialized unit with camera in one location and screen in another - Blue Tooth maybe.

I was afraid of that. Back to my search for a multi-function, economical solution it seems.

I always buy microSD cards, they always come with SD adapters so I can use them in just about anything.

I'm still using a GoPro. I have them and don't want to spend money on a dedicated dashcam.
Powering it from the lighter, set to loop every 60 minutes and 1080-60.

This is just an example of some of the stupid stuff I see around me every day, southbound on VA-150 the video starts just as I pass the Huguenot Rd exit. Watch the blue car, the second car to cut over in front of me

In this one, I'm turning from Overlook St onto Mimosa St headed towards Rt-1. As I turn the corner I notice a man and woman with some small children up ahead walking away from me in my lane. We're going uphill and I can't see past the crest so moving to the left to pass them is not an option. I'm in a truck so I decide to hang back from them so as not to frighten them. There's also a pair of solid yellow lines in the center of the road indicating no crossing the center line of the street. I wait as the pedestrians move away from the road at the top of the hill, then watch what happens

Another one

Nothing happens in this one until Immediately after I make the right turn on the divided highway, then you need to watch up ahead where the stoplight is, to be more precise watch the cars turning from my left to go into the lane ahead of me. It was hard not to laugh when I saw this happen right in front of me

Don't know what the driver of the car up ahead was thinking, he was going south on Pump Rd and made a left turn onto Gayton Rd, but obviously wasn't looking where he was going and he took out the 'keep right' sign in the median

And then he doubles down and passed in the interesection, off the pavement...but at least he got a couple cars ahead and likely saved 20 seconds on his trip! :)

I had one that was so aggressive that I was talking to the sheriff's office on the phone reporting it when she used a grass median to try and pass and used my work trucks front bumper to pit maneuver herself into the ditch. The sheriff just transferred my call to Highway patrol lol.

I didn't show that one because of the car coming over in front of me, I was already slowing down because of the stopped cars at the light. I was just showing the stupidity that driver possessed when he decided to pass the other cars on the shoulder

If you buy a dash cam, make sure it has a good low light performance. Here, in this example, you can see 2 cameras, rear and front, different models, how they differ in quality in low light (switch to 1080 resolution). Not that the rear camera is horrible, in fact it is closer to better ones. The front camera is just super. The camera you buy might have way worse low light quality, make sure you do research before you buy. If you camera cannot do a quality filming when it is dark, it is like you don't have one at all.

Both of these dash cams do a satisfactory job.

Picked up a couple of dashcams for my truck and the wife's car.
Chose the Spytec G1W-CB. It's the exact same thing as what I originally posted except it's all black instead of the chrome bezel around the lens. I went with that because I didn't want it to stand out if I leave it in the windshield.
I will say I expected the camera to be larger and heavier.
