Hey guys so I've been reading up on the open carry laws for Virginia. I live in the Hampton roads area but I'm a little fuzzy in the rules about transporting my handgun in a vehicle. If I'm sitting or driving can I still wear it on my side in the holster or does it have to be unloaded or in a container or what?

There are no "open carry laws" in Virginia. It is the absence of such law that leaves OC legal.

Unless otherwise restricted (felon, mentally incompetent) and 18 yo carry/wear it as designed - loaded and on your hip whether in a vehicle or not.

May I “open carry” a firearm in Virginia?
A firearm may be carried openly in Virginia except where prohibited by statute. Please refer to Sections
18.2-279 to 18.2-311.2. The Code of Virginia may be searched at http://law.lis.virginia.gov/vacode.

8. Any person who may lawfully possess a firearm and is carrying a handgun while in a personal, private motor vehicle or vessel and such handgun is secured in a container or compartment in the vehicle or vessel

"...secured in a container"
isn't that what a holster does? secure/contain the firearm?
This section refers to keeping/carrying a pistol in the glove compartment or console of a vehicle.

Note that neither need be locked.

I live in Suffolk, and have OC'd everywhere around the area. I haven't had any issues anywhere.

When I drive I keep it in my holster.

Are you new to the area?

Come see.

Our breakfasts and monthly dinners (2nd Tues. each month) are open to all. Always lively discussions and much to learn.

We have a dinner now scheduled for Nov. 14th. All age groups are represented, children welcome.

Might want to what many call the Wally World Walk. It is frequently recommended for persons as their first place to carry after receiving a concealed carry permit.
