Last week, the South Carolina General Assembly gave final passage to H 4364, which will reduce the minimum legal age to possess or acquire through a private transfer a handgun from 21 to 18. H 4364is now pending before Governor Sanford.

Under South Carolina Code §§ 16-23-30 and 50, the mere possession of a handgun by a person under 21 years of age is a felony punishable by up to 5 years in prison.

H 4364 will enable young adults to own handguns and keep them in their homes or their vehicle's glove box, center console, or motorcycle saddlebags. See § 16-23-20. This bill does not affect concealed weapon permit eligibility.

Click here for an AP wire story on the bill.

Update: Governor Sanford signed H 4364 on April 2, 2008 and it is now in effect.

If you're old enough to vote for the President, you're old enough to defend yourself responsibly.

Hmmm, we are tracking only 9 states with handgun possession age mins of 21 - the AP story says NRA says 18. I think the reportied NRA number is in error and/or including states weith transfer bans as de facto ban on possession.
