Recently a client called me to ask if he could abbreviate his trust name when he engraved an SBR.

As one might expect in the Google age, prior to calling me he had searched on the internet and, based upon what he had found there, was already convinced that it would be acceptable.

The only problem is that it’s definitely not acceptable to the ATF.

IMHO - it is better to avoid the pitfalls by seeking competant legal advice before the fact, rather than seeking help after the fact.

If I'm not mistaken, routine civil action is considerably cheaper than fighting the system, or G-d forbide, criminal defense - both in terms, not just of money, but time also.

John,

What is an "SBR"?

John may have time to confirm in the morning.

SBR = short barreled rifle.

SBRs may be created by trimming down a larger rifle, by building a rifle with an original barrel shorter than 16 inches, or by adding a shoulder stock to a handgun which is fitted with a barrel shorter than 16 inches, thereby legally redefining it as a rifle rather than a handgun.

Engrave it AGAIN ... with the proper name somewhere ... the ATF really is not that picky where the proper name is, as long as its somewhere..they know engraving mistakes happen....
