Presidential Message on School Safety

Trump's anniversary statement mentions bumpban and ERPO:

Issued on: February 14, 2019 [...]
The day after the tragedy in Parkland, I told the Nation that school safety would be a top priority for my Administration. [...]

Carson Abt, a survivor and now a senior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, suggested that we need to ensure that all schools have the resources necessary to institute active shooter protocols and drills. Julia Cordover, another Parkland survivor, asked that my Administration take action to ban bump stocks. [...]

We have made tremendous strides. One month after that important meeting, I signed the STOP School Violence Act and Fix NICS Act into law. The Departments of Education and Health and Human Services began the process of expanding health and other services to low-income public elementary and secondary schools. The Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation also convened a School Safety Summit that discussed how to better identify troubled students, conduct threat assessments, and institute anonymous reporting systems. Additionally, my Administration has completed a regulatory process, which it had started in October of 2017, to ban bump stocks. [...]

The report offered nearly 100 diverse and evidence-based policy recommendations, ranging from use of Extreme Risk Protection Orders to improved mental health and counseling services in our schools. To protect against acts of violence on school grounds, the Commission also recommended a structure of interagency and intergovernmental collaboration, strengthening the working relationship between educational personnel, law enforcement, and State and local leadership.

A thorough mix of some okay (maybe) and some very bad ideas, and the resulting policies. I didn't quote all of them.

Notes: NRA not mentioned as part of the origins and/or promotion of some bad ideas, but the part they played in bumpban is proven. Parkland is a rich area, not poor. It seems that intergovernmental collaboration (to overlook crime and warning signs among favored groups of students and youth) was one of the contributing factors that enabled the Parkland shooting, not a missing factor that would have prevented it.

Needs: Very often bad ideas and inaccurate stories are believed when they are repeated. People have that weakness. 2A supporters need to have their voices heard along with truthful and factual accounts, and good ideas to combat the bad. It's an ongoing struggle for hearts and minds that started before our time and will never end. It's life. Not always easy - requires time, energy, health, and money to promote the good. Be heard with your legislators and the WH, but also with the general public and youth - they determine future policy.

There is absolutely no ramifications for anyone reporting other citizens action(s) which the reporter feel violates their religious, moral, or their understanding of the law sensibilities.

Trump pretty much guaranteed nobody in my family will vote for him again by those actions he brags about in that message.

At the moment his only saving grace I can see is he pardoned the Hammonds.

Congratulations - EVERY school has all the necessary resources except ONE: Knowledge.

Seriously, one doesn't need "re$ource$ to conduct drills. Whether Duck and Cover, fire drills, or active shooter drills, they require knowledge, experience, and time. They do NOT require money.

Now, additional security measures such as cameras and armed security requires money, but don't put the cart before the horse! By all means, DRILL THEM.

A "well-regulated" populace can accomplish far more than untrained idiots with a ton of very expensive hardware and services.

Ya know since9, that was the premise of Union Generals after the civil war, which precipitated the NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION and their firearm training programs still the gold standard & cornerstone of the majority of this nation’s LE, state mandated civilian CC training programs today.

[do not confuse NRA’s ILA activities with the organization’s training activies!]

If his message has deterred your vote the Hammonds pardon is irrelevant...no? Not voting for Trump is a vote for a liberal in 2020.

No. Not voting for Trump is not voting for Trump.
It could be a vote for a third party candidate, which we desperately need BTW or no vote at all.

And yes the Hammond issue is relevant because it would now be the ONLY reason I and my family and friends might still vote for him.

Unless of course he keeps pushing anti gun stances and calling for red flag laws.

Ghost - DON'T SPLIT THE VOTE. DJT will need EVERY VOTE in 2020 to stay in office.

Agree. Splitting the vote is stupid. While analysis reveals Ross Perot didn't directly cause H.W. Bush to lose in 1992, who knows how many conservatives stayed home instead of going to the polls because they thought Perot had split the vote?

The most selfless, patriotic thing a conservative could do is to NOT run against Trump. That goes double for voters.

I may vote for him again simply for pardoning the Hammonds.

But if I do it'll be holding my nose since he has signed more gun control than any President since Clinton and calling for more.

And the GOP CONGRESS sent him the bills to sign.

If their is a 3rd party candidate that mirrors my position I'll vote for him.

I think the RINOs in Congress are, quite frankly, Demoncrap plants, as part of a long-term strategy to overtake our government.

I've written all my local, state, and federal elected officials and asked them point-blank: Do you support our United States Constitution as it is written?"

To date, only ONE person has responded to that question, in the affirmative, and his voting record substantiates it. I see from the voting records of the rest of them that they're skirting the law to one extent or another.

Yep, S9. It's like having a part in a school play, or a game. Somebody has to play the villain, or the Indians, or the straight man. I think many Republican bureaucrats were total fakes, prepared to become a permanent minority party, the pets and token puppets of the ruling party - obviously a losing position but with individual perks and an important position for playing the part. DJT's win upset that big bipartisan plan and they weren't too happy with it.

If a socialist ultra liberal is elected POTUS we will suffer far more than trump, especially if they get a hold of the house, and senate also.

Agreed, WW. Trump is flawed in the area of 2A, he believes he's defending it, but it seems to be his weakest area of understanding. He's a NY/FL man. But we don't need to lose the whole farm after losing a few hens. It's also true that Trump basically followed a plan laid out by the geniuses at the NRA. The only part where he went off-script (and he always does) was to tell Congress they didn't need to be so afraid of the NRA. That shocked them for a week or two, but then all was cozy again, and why not? He did exactly what they recommended.

Evidently the geniuses thought that Bump, Age 21, and ERPO were the least harmful concessions to make in the case of too many shootings. So it's a shame Trump is weak on 2A, but even more of a shame that he got that way by following the premiere gun owner organization. Let's put pressure on Trump, Congress, and the NRA to be strong on gun rights. But let's also not have a President AOC or Bernie and kiss the nation goodbye. Vote strong, vote united. Trump is strong in some other areas that count for survival. If only we could get his ear on 2A.
