I know it isn’t about open...to a point.
I have a real Colt AR15 I purchased new in 1978. It’s model designation is AR15-Sporter. It has the triangular fore stock
my question is can I safely shoot NATO.556 or only .223?
I have been told only .223 but honestly could have shot both in the past for I have had the rifle a long time.
thanks in advance, Mike

Have a read.

The rifle comes in 2 calibers; the military caliber of 5.56 X 45 or the equivalent .223. Because of the pressures associated with the 5.56mm, it is inadvisable to fire 5.56mm in an AR-15 marked .223 and can result in damage to the rifle or injury to the shooter. So they say.

That is what I am being told. I understand if the barrel is marked .223/5.56 then it can hold the pressure. I had Been reloading for many years but quit for about 30. Started back up and have been reloading .223 brass but I may have been putting 5.56 load values in the case. But it has been shooting them. Now I have concerns. Thanks for replying.

Pro tip: read the printing on the barrel. It tells you what it can shoot.
That said, "most" 5.56 barrels can also shoot .223, but not the other way around.

an observation...is there a cite for your edict where you state "most" ?

especially since LG discussions are verboten by forum guidelines
