I was just wondering if anyone knew if it was legal to carry on the city buses? I have seen signs on the buses that say no firearms but the RTC website says nothing. Given the fact that it is "Public" transportation I should be able to OC. I do know that security and bus drivers get really nervous and like to bully people at the bus stations just because of the way they look. If OC is legal on the buses then this would be a good way to exercise our rights. I have a feeling that LEO will be called if someone OC's on a bus. So if someone knows anything about this please let me know, I would love to try it.

The bus system may be public, but the company who holds the contract to operate them is not. And that company owns the buses. So from that angle it is a private property issue. If they say no then it's the same as a private business owner saying no. Look at it this way, its a public utility like the power company, gas company, or cable company. They hold a public contract but are privately owned.

It's still public transportation. They can not deny you access. We had that problem down here till Nevada Carrier got them straitened out. A couple of months back me and him met up out on the strip around noon on a sat. We hopped on the bus in front of the Flamingo, road it to downtown ate lunch at the Golden Gate casino then road it back. All while open carrying.

Ok so I did a little more research and made a phone call. RTC Washoe only allows concealed carry on their buses. No OC "For the safety of other passengers". I think this is BS. I don't use public transportation but if I did I would like to be able to OC since I don't have my CCW.

They're wrong. We had that same problem here and Nevada Carrier set them straight. They can not deny you access. If OC is allowed in public and they are PUBLIC transportation they must let you on. Hopefully NC will see this and help you get the ball rolling.

I sent an e-mail to RTC Washoe about firearms policy. Here is the body of the e-mail. Will post response once I receive one.

I was wondering if RTC was regulated by the city/state. If so I was wondering what RTC's firearm policy was?

Here is the email I just received from RTC Washoe.....

Dear Mr. Patenaude,

Thank you for your inquiries regarding the RTC of Washoe County. In regard to your questions: 1) The RTC of Washoe County is regulated by numerous city, county, state and federal agencies. They include but are not limited to the City of Reno Fire Department, the Washoe County Health District, Nevada OSHA, the Federal Transit Administration and the Transportation Security Administration. 2) The RTC Board of Commissioners allows permitted concealed weapons owners to carry a concealed weapon on the system. All other weapons in plain view are prohibited on the system.

Wishful thinking...
NRS 268.418 said:
the Legislature reserves for itself such rights and powers as are necessary to regulate the transfer, sale, purchase, possession, ownership, transportation, registration and licensing of firearms and ammunition in Nevada, and no city may infringe upon those rights and powers.
