Perhaps, it was this gentleman's lack of respect for authority figures and lack of common courtesy that really were the factors that fueled this tense situation.

Respect for authority does not equate to submissive behavior or subservience. Not to mention the fact that we are supposed to be extremely suspect of all authority, and we are the only ones who can or will keep them accountable. These cops lied to and insulted a law abiding citizen. What 'respect' do you think they are entitled to?
