When the masked men started to pat the brothers down, the victim pulled out a knife. In response, one of the men took out a gun and shot the victim in the leg, according to police.

Luckily the victim is expected to make full recovery, although he days of adventuring are likely over. And- GASP!- this was right near a school!!!

When you pull a weapon out in such circumstances you best use it and quick.

A knife is a weapon well suited for the guy's situation ... close quarters..why he was not able to kill them is likely due to hesitation or using the knife to "scare" them.

Weapons are not designed to scare .. they are designed to maim or kill. Use them accordingly.

I think your right he most likely pulled the knife hoping to scare them off it didn't work out to well.

A knife used by someone who knows what they are doing can be a very effective weapon.
