Told I cannot OC in an Englewood Walmart

Late this afternoon my roommate and I decided to go over to The Shootist and get in some range time. There is a Walmart right over there so we stopped in to purchase some ammo. I've OC in that particular location numerous times. One time I was told that since I was OCing I would have to be escorted out of the store after I completed my ammo purchase. That was their store policy I was told. At any rate, I have never been told that it is corporate policy to not allow anyone to carry a gun in the store except for LEOs. Well tonight that is exactly what Andrew, the store's Asset Protection Manager told me their corporate policy is.
Here's how it all went down, for those who like the play by play. My roommate and I entered the store and merrily walked over to the ammo case, we were about an aisle away when I heard an employee ask my roommate if I was LE. I was a step or two ahead of her so I turned around and told him no. He followed up asking if I have a license to carry a gun like that, I enthusiastically told him that it was not required in this state while making our way to the ammo. After looking for a minute or two we were approached by Andrew the Asset Protection Manager. Andrew asked if I was LE and after I told him that I was not, he informed me that I would not be allowed to OC in the store. I told him that I have been in here dozens of times while OC and have never been told that. I told him that I would leave the store, disarm, then come back in to speak with a store manager. While escorting me to the exit he stated that I couldn't just carry a gun like that. I told him that that's not the case and that it is completely lawful, though he seemed to be sure that he was right.
After disarming I came back in to speak with the store manager and after waiting for a considerable amount of time she finally made an appearance. I told her that I did not wish to make a scene, but that I have shopped in here on numerous occasions and have never been told that I could not OC and further that I was under the impression that Walmart's corporate policy on the matter is to abide by state law. She told me that she had to look up the policy because she initially did not herself know but found out that corporate policy is what Andrew described. I told her that I would be confirming that with the regional office.
I'll post an update as soon as I am able.

I do not have access to the letter at this time, however,
Walmarts/Sam's club corp policy to to follow Fed, State and local laws.

If legal to OC in the city/state you are in, then They will not interfere.

Find out who the district manager is and get in touch with him/her.

The same thing happened to me in a WalMart here in Montgomery only it was the store manager who rather angrily confronted me. Eye95 contacted the district manager as did I. I haven't seen that particular store manager since then.

I did see the district manager in the store at a later date and he was profuse in his apologies to me. I've been in there many times since and no problems.

I do not understand why you are bothering to answer their questions about whether you are LE. They are not law enforcement and have no right to question you and you certainly are under no obligation to provide them with the means to eject you. Answer their question with a question and when they tell you who they are, ask them why they think they have the right to question you. If they persist have them contact corporate and get back to you, still refusing to answer any questions about who you are.

I answered the question because I wanted to, not because I thought I had to. I once had a Walmart employee at that particular store ask me that question just out of curiosity. He didn't know that OC is lawful here, outside of Denver. We had a very pleasant conversation that ended in him being more informed. I think most people just don't know, if I tell them and they still want to pick a fight, well then there are proper channels to deal with it.

I think I'm having dinner tonight in that area. I'm always needing to stop by Wal-Mart for somehing. In fact I think I need to pick up some .40.

And yes Wally Worlds corporate policy is to abide by state laws.

Is there someplace he could get a copy of Wally-worlds policy to print out and take with him next time so he can let the manager chew on it while he shops. It is sad very very sad that the average citizen knows more about the stores policies than the so called managers and works of that store.

Here in Idaho I haven't been told I couldn't have my firearm while in Wallmart, I was speaking for the gentleman from Colorado can download a copy so he could have it.

I don't think his Wallmart has a copy of their policies on hand; it is either that or the employees at the Colorado Wallmart don't know how to read.

I answered the question because I wanted to, not because I thought I had to.

Well, let's say you wanted to practice a little "verbal judo", having ascertained that the question wasn't just innocent curiosity.

You: '...and may I ask who you are?'
Him: 'I'm an employee of this store'
You: 'So, is it your job to confront shoppers and ask probing questions, or do you just take it upon yourself?'
Him: 'Are you a cop or not?'

You: 'Did you see that guy over in housewares that looked like he had a sawed off shotgun under his coat?'
Him: 'No, what did he look like?'
You: 'Did you know that criminals never wear their firearms out in the open, because if they're going to rob you, they want the element of surprise?'
Him: 'I guess that makes sense. You have a nice day, sir'. (goes off to look for guy in trench coat)

When a person comes up and 'interviews' you they're setting you up to be dominated. You'll never learn to seize the initiative if you don't practice.

Paragraphs are your friend.
Apparently they are your friend, not his. He seems to have got along just fine without them. You're the one that seems to be upset by their lack of use.

I didn't make it to the Englewood wally world but I did OC while out and about today which included about and hour and a half of shopping at the one off I-70 and Tower.

C'mon, do we need the cliqueism in here? We were getting along just fine with eachother with no "divisions" and now these snooty paragraphs want to come up and group us on thesis ideas and space us apart. Not cool, man. Not cool.

Idiotic policy, since I'm sure you OC'd while loaded, right?

At any rate, I have never been told that it is corporate policy to not allow anyone to carry a gun in the store except for LEOs.

It's not. Walmart corporate policy with respect to carry is to conform to local and state law.

Well tonight that is exactly what Andrew, the store's Asset Protection Manager told me their corporate policy is.

Andrew is an idiot, a liar, or both.

Here's how it all went down, for those who like the play by play. My roommate and I entered the store and merrily walked over to the ammo case, we were about an aisle away when I heard an employee ask my roommate if I was LE. I was a step or two ahead of her so I turned around and told him no. He followed up asking if I have a license to carry a gun like that, I enthusiastically told him that it was not required in this state...

I usually answer the "license" question with a simple "Colorado state law does not require a licence for open carry." Short, simple, but complete, and leaves no room for debate.

Yep. Andrew is an idiot.

After disarming I came back in to speak with the store manager and after waiting for a considerable amount of time she finally made an appearance. She told me that she had to look up the policy because she initially did not herself know but found out that corporate policy is what Andrew described.

Since that is not Walmart corporate policy, she is most certainly a liar.

I told her that I would be confirming that with the regional office.

Good for you! And please do. Best with a written letter simply asking them of their policy. I would NOT relate any detail of the incident. Doing so may make them feel like they have to back her up.

I'll post an update as soon as I am able.

Thank you - please do. And if they send you a letter, would you please post a copy of it here? Feel free to redact any personally identifying information.

I will readily admit that I am not much of a valiant crusader for the open carry cause. I merely opt to open carry in order to suppress criminal activity in the proximity of my wife and myself.

PERCEPTION is the issue I think when OC'ers encounter such resistance/opposition.

Transacting ammo business at the gun counter while OC'ing always seems to bring out this type of response in Walmart. I have purchased a shotgun at a Walmart - and had to be "escorted" out of the store.

Reflecting on Badger Johnson's perspective - If I am asked if I am an LEO - I always respond with "Retired" - which of course I very much AM. That reply has worked for me on the one occassion that my right to bear arms in defense of my person has been " BROUGHT INTO QUESTION" in Colorado.

Same here, just not retired LEO. To avoid falling afoul of impersonating, I think I'd reply "No, I'm retired." At least the "no" is a direct and truthful response to their question, while "I'm retired" is also truthful. It's just not in response to their question.

Actually they are not. I find them quite demanding and they have never been anything more than a nuisance to me, but thank you for your contribution to the thread. :dude:

I laughed out loud at this and woke up my infant daughter you SOB. Stop being funny!
