Why is it even a point of contention whether the officer identified himself or not? This has no bearing on whether there may have been a need for self-defense nor at what level.
Considering the FOP made a point out his identifing himself it must be a important point. Maybe, just maybe, the attackers would have paused if they had known he was a cop. Then again if the report is true that the atterkers did not care that he was a cop.....

Self defense is self defense and all citizens have the right to defend themselves regardless of their employment status.
