I just went to the Human Resources Dept website in Wausau and looked at what other government employees earn as well as contract language. The links are provided below for Wausau. Being familiar with teacher contract language, I can see that the language, provisions, and benefits of these other public employee contracts are quite similar. I also provided you with the fact and the link that public employees are 4.8% under compensated when compared to the private sector equivalent.

Most of you know nothing of how tests and testing scores can be compared. This is a science unto itself. When many of the states found that their scores did not meet NCLB Act minimums, they changed the test to make it easier just they could get federal funding and not be shut down. Wisconsin did not water their tests down and their tests are comparatively harder than most.

Maybe some of you should investigate the facts. Let's face it, some you have a thing against teachers. Hell will freeze over before you get over your hatred.
Many of you fail to realize that there are thousands of public employees besides teachers and they are all going to be severely affected as well. Of course, you just say "they deserve it too". And remember, it is not about the money anymore - they conceded to those changes. It's about rights. The saying comes to mind and ends with then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak for me."

I am not against fiscal responsibility. I am against punitive and vindictive actions that target the public employees. IMHO, this divisiveness was carefully orchestrated. I can see that it brings out all the "best" in us.

Glock34, I provided you with statistics, not interpretations, not what somebody "said", about how Wisconsin students compare to the rest of the Nation. If you choose not to believe me, so be it.

FWIW... I'm in Vilas County. Small population, lower than average income levels, higher unemployment, than most of southern WI. The lowest paid teacher in my school district - who just happens to be my grandson's kindergarten teacher, and she IS a good teacher, not knocking her in any way... but she makes $58,764 in salary and another $11,505 in benefits. She's only been teaching for 1 or 2 years, so her benefit package is lower than all the other teachers. Total compensation is $70,269. For a 190 day work year, that breaks down to $369.37 per day (and her "day" is limited, by contract to 7, not 8, hours). That's $52.77 per hour, starting pay.

The highest paid "teacher" (excluding district administrator and principals) makes $70,238 in salary, and benefits of $32,216. Total compensation of $102,454. Again, 190 day work year = $529.23 per day, or $75.60 per hour.

The 4 principals in my district each make $85,000 in salary, and $36-38,000 in benefits. District administrator makes a salary of $118,101 with $44,379 in benefits.

Oh, and to try to keep this OC related. I wonder what all of the teachers think of gun carry? I know that my Rep (Lena Taylor), is very anti-gun. She will not even discuss carry with me. And now she has left me with no representation at all. I just asked her about our carry laws last week, and now she has left the State! I have no rep. at all now! She needs to be replaced ASAP.

What if we kept the teacher's current deal and just completely axed all the Admins? This way the teachers could do their job without interference from the brown nosers and we could save money?

And on a sidenote, have any of our elected officials taken a cut in pay and benefits? Just wondering.

I am fairly sure the pension and healthcare cuts affect all state government employees.

I do know, for example, that Walker returned close to $200K of his salary during the 8 years as County Executive because he thought he made too much.

Also, all state 'executives' will have their pension funded at the same level as the rank and file. The new bill changes executive pension from 2% per year of service (so if you work for 50 years you get 100% of your salary for retirement) to 1.67%.

People REALLY need to read the bill before they go off on it.

Well at least we agree on the $74,844. Now let's see where it comes from.

First of all you need to compare apples to apples

Household income is not the same as Salary plus benefits

So, I went to the WI-DPI, most of you won't trust them but it is where the taxpayer group gets their info.

(You can find the info here http://dpi.state.wi.us/lbstat/newasr.html)

Note that the average salary is $49,093 (after 15.6 yrs average experience). And, the values that make up the highest salary also include all the extra income from coaching, Dr.ED, summer school, etc - not just from teaching a regular school year only. Average benefits are $25, 750

Now keep in mind that all of the teachers have at least a Bachelor's degree and most probably have a Master's.

The $46 000.00 is coming from all walks of life, including those with a high school diploma or less.

I would say that given the years of experience and education that was put into getting the job, WI teachers deserve more. Any other professional looking at this is going to say "for that amount, I would never be a teacher". All of you people can go to college, get a degree and become a teacher if you think it is so good.
When I went into teaching I knew that I would have to defer my total compensation until I retired. I knew I wasn't going to have the up-front money to spend on my family or things (i.e. buy guns). My vocation was a life-long commitment. I know I made a difference and I am damn proud of it.

I think all good teachers should earn $1 million a year. That being said, I can't afford to pay the taxes that would be required to do that and if I paid 1 teacher $1 million a year, with the current contracts and unions, I would also have to pay the crappy teachers the same $1 million.

So..... we need to get rid of the unions and find some sort of metric that is fair to evaluate teachers and pay them accordingly. It wasn't until after Walker got sworn in and just before the budget bill was introduced that WEAC came up with a plan that they fought against just over a year ago.

Even their new teacher evaluation plan isn't foolproof. It puts the teachers in charge of evaluating any teacher with over 3 years experience. In my opinion, that is putting the fox in charge of the hen house.

Perhaps you should add to your post that the statistics you are referring to come entirely from workers in the state of California? I have actually been hearing the exact opposite of this all day, that comparing similar employment private wages are higher than public.

What do I think we should glean from these conflicting statistics? That it is highly likely that BOTH sources of information are in some way incorrect, and a middle ground is more likely. Also that this "Us versus Them" attitude, walking party lines, is rather silly. It only leads to well meaning people pushing misleading statistics to try and back a stance they took spur of the moment after hearing someone else give them a biased report of the situations, and sticking with it even as they learn new information.

The truth of the matter is that the unions had already AGREED to the increased pension and health insurance costs, they were willing to make the sacrifices in order to help the economy. However, Walker apparently also wants to remove the unions so he can more easily pass more in the future.

"Under current law, University of Wisconsin (UW) System employees... have the right to collectively bargain over wages, hours, and conditions of employment.
This bill eliminates the rights of these employees to collectively bargain."

Addressing the "UW System employees" part, which impacts me most directly as a college student. First of all, what defines a "UW System employee". Well, any employee already under a union is NOT a UW System employee, this means that only new teachers, or those entering the system, will be barred from collective bargaining. Of course, it also limits what current ones can bargain for.

The U.W. system already suffers from having compensation 12% below its peers(see link below), do we really need our state to be less attractive for new, better professors and out-of-state students? Once again, the key point is that the Unions DID AGREE to paying what was asked into pensions and health insurance, which is a VERY significant amount of their wages. So, the key issue is why should these people give up rights they fought twenty-three years to obtain, and what is Walkers ultimate goal in this?

I want you all to know that I clearly see both sides of this issue. I have made it a primary goal to try and see all sides of an issue. If certain people had remained respectful in this thread and other threads, I would not have even thought about responding. But no, people were attacked. Not their posts, or what they said, but who they were. Certain people get all bent out of shape, start swearing, and generally degrade a discussion into shouting match.

I have been very active in the teachers' union - so shoot me. I have worked hard as leader in my district to reach solutions when most would have either given up or turned to mayhem. I have helped many teachers become better, but at the same time I have counseled teachers to "move on". I realize that the current budget/revenue system cannot support the pay structure for public employees. I've spent many hours this last 10 days helping my former colleagues make retirement decisions and be aware of the consequences of not having any say in their working conditions. You'll be happy to know, some great teachers are leaving the profession.

I am a taxpayer. I also don't try to nickel and dime the IRS with every deduction and loophole under the sun. I worked hard for what I have. I hope all here can say that and I assume that they do/did. I do not poke fun at or am disrespectful of mechanics, or DJs, or restaurant owners, or computer systems analysts, or accountants and anybody else because of their job(s). I might poke at a few firearms instructors but only those that have a hidden agenda. I know times are tough. I provided the only income for most of my adult life. There was no way that I was able to save much on a teachers salary. Eventually, I was able to pull ahead a little at a time. I did so by not smoking, or drinking or going on fancy trips or driving expensive machines. I took on extra jobs to buy a gun or two. Finally when all seems pretty good, this budget fiasco (remember we were in the black before Jan 1) comes along and will probably cost my wife her job. What does the future hold - I do not know. But I do know that I am not alone because a whole lot of you are now saying "It's about time he joins the rest of the world." I know what my friends and family are going through. I am, however, not going to blame any of you because of your jobs or who you are. But when I find out that some big corporations are richer and richer because of the little guy, I am gonna be mighty pi$$ed off.

Well gang, I've been living in a real world for a long time. It sure seems to me that so many of you think your situation is special. It is and it isn't. We are all special but we are still all the same - human beings worthy of respect and dignity for who we are.

After a lot of thought, I have to confess. I am not veteran nor have I shed blood for my country, but I'm about 8 gallons towards the blood bank, I don't own a bike, unless you count an 18 speed mountain bike, I don't own a Glock, Maybe, I just don't have any redeeming qualities.

But I do know this. I have taught some wonderful students. They are doctors and lawyers, engineers and professors. They work at Microsoft and Mayo Clinic. They fly jets for the Air force and run nuclear powered ships in the Navy. They have gone to West Point, Colorado Springs and Annapolis. I helped them, several thousand, achieve their dreams. I am damn proud of what I have done.

You may have your opinions of what I am, or any other teacher is, worth. And, you can express your opinions. But when you do, and how you express those opinions, allows the world to see who you really are inside. I have often wondered if people are three sheets to wind when they post on here. It shouldn't be that way. Maybe I expect too much. After all, as some say, this is just a forum.
